"Bossypants"

One of my favorite parts of life is laughing with friends. This is why I chose the book Bossypants by Tina Fey.

This month’s book to read was chose by Becky.

Bossypants is a memoir of Tina Fey’s life growing up and the various jobs she had and how funny, embarrassing moments shaped her life. Did you know that she was slashed in the face in an alley when she was in Kindergarten? Neither did I! She even has a scar to prove it. One way Fey judges a person’s character is how they react to her scar. I’d like to think I would play it cool and not bring it up but who knows.

She goes on to share her time at Summer Showtime, a theater group that is filled with teenage drama and coming out followed by her job at the YMCA. She meets an eclectic group of characters along the way. Our team all agreed that the jobs we had before our “careers” taught us so much more than college.

Fey’s comedy career continues as she joins the touring company The Second City then lands a job as a writer on Saturday Night Live. We learn being a women in comedy comes is harder than being a man in comedy =) She reminisces on her time being Sarah Palin on SNL and her surprise when she actually met Sarah Palin. Spoiler alert - they got along just fine.

One thing our team enjoyed was hearing Fey talk about her father, Donald Fey. All of us could label someone who is/was a “Don Fey” in our own lives.

I’ve always been intrigued by women thriving in a male dominated industry, like comedy and I genuinely enjoyed reading this book.
